Phnom Penh – hmmmmm [South East Asia Series 2019.2020]

Phnom Penh is slightly chaotic and a little bit weird. My main reason for being here is because I wanted to visit the Killing Fields and the S-21 museum and I don’t regret it at all, but let’s just say that I’m ready to go.

NYE in Phnom Penh was also very uneventful. Tried to go out but the traffic was so bad that I just quit on the entire idea and add a lovely night in, chilling and chatting with the girls in my dorm.

During my stay, two people have made it worthwhile.

Phea is one of the receptionists at the Envoy Hostel and he is studying Hospitality and Tourism.

Phea studies during the day and then works at the hostel from 7pm till 7am. He cycles for 30km everyday to come to work and in his own words “enjoys the exercise”.

Phea sleeps 3 to 4 hours a night and is honestly one of the nicest young men I’ve met in Cambodia. His smile really shines when he talks about his work and his studies.

I need to remember Phea next time I’m grumpy because I’ve only slept 5 hours and need to get to work, which a is 5min walk from my flat.

To Fern.. a massive thank you for just sitting and chatting with me for hours. Somehow I feel like the weird situations we were both in at Phnom Penh kept us in the room most of the time but it really allowed me to get to know you, and I’m super thankful for that. Sharing our first world problems was fun and insightful in a very weird way. Thank you for also teaching me so much about the U.S!

I hope you’re able to leave as soon as possible and I honestly think you’re doing the right thing. Just follow that gut feeling and stand up for yourself… you will be just fine.
