Chapter 14: Christchurch (with stop at Mount Cook) [New Zealand series 17/18]

Location: Christchurch (with Mount Cook stop)

Hostel: YHA Rollerston House

To do: Botanic Gardens

Like every other trip, we always wish we had more time. Even if it was just one more day. One more hour. Christchurch was my last stop before flying back to the UK and it still hurts a little bit when I think about it.

On my way from Queenstown to Christchurch I stopped at Mount Cook for a couple of hours but unfortunately the weather was horrendous and I had some kind of stomach bug (seems to happen to me on the last few days of travelling, always!).

I got to Christchurch in the evening but was still able to go for a quick walk to get come food but that was it for that day. The hostel was ok but not the best, however I was only staying there for 2 nights so I wasn’t too bothered.

The next day (Sunday), I fully explored the city and it’s a really interesting one to visit. Christchurch is very much still recovering from the 2011 earthquake that severely damaged the city. However, what you can see now it’s an incredible community that has come together to rebuilt their city and it’s turning out into an incredible place. The artistic vibe is amazing and I wouldn’t be surprise if it becomes one of THE places not to miss in New Zealand in the next 5 years.

I was lucky enough to be there on a Sunday which meant there was a very cool, chilled festival going at the park which was just what I needed before getting my flight the next day. That night, I saw an amazing sunset and it almost felt like New Zealand was saying goodbye to me… it made me so sad I had to leave but also so happy that I got to do this amazing trip.

There was only one last thing to do before going back to the UK. My tattoo! The tattoo that will always remind me of New Zealand, its colours, it’s people, its mountains.
