Unfortunately I don’t have a lot to say about Auckland since I only stayed there for a night when I landed and then for a day when I was on my way to Rotorua.
If you’re staying in the city centre and don’t have a lot of time to take a day trip or anything similar, Auckland feels very much like any other city. People going to work, students walking around on their way to their lectures etc.
Apparently I missed out big time on the island near Auckland and the beaches that you can visit nearby, but I didn’t have a car so I mainly walked around in the parks (Victoria Park and Albert Park) before moving on towards Paihia and later, on my way back down, on my way to Rotorua).
If you have the time and you’re staying in New Zealand for more than a month, I’d definitely recommend getting a car and travelling around the area, since apparently it is stunning.
