Location: Salzburg (Austria)
Hostel: Yoho International Youth Hostel
To do: The Original Sound of Music Tour; Hohensalzburg Castle
To eat: Apple Strudel
I had a very limited amount of time from the moment I got to Salzburg until my Sound of Music Tour. Needless to say I was far too excited to spend my afternoon singing along to all the Sound of Music songs and seeing all the beautiful sights that Austria has to offer.
I went for a walk whilst I waited to go on my tour and it started snowing….not just a little bit….like…a lot! It was April!!! I just couldn’t believe it.
Regardless of the weather, it was an amazing tour and the views were still stunning, as you might imagine. It was however ridiculously cold and I couldn’t wait to go back to the hostel.
So I went back and treated myself to a nice warm meal while watching the Sound of Music with other crazy people. There’s something to be said about watching such a classic film, surrounded by people that are there for the exact same reason =p
I had a full day ahead of me before I had to travel to Zurich, so I decided to explore Salzburg again and committed to going to the Castle. Firstly, to my surprise, it was sunny! Really sunny!! Which meant I got to see Salzburg under a layer of snow but also in a beautiful sunny day, which is amazing.
Now, the castle. Let me tell you a story about that castle…..
It’s amazing. It’s everything. And the views are breathtaking.
Getting there however…well that’s s different adventure, specially if you’re scared of highs. There’s a lovely funicular to go up there (https://www.salzburg.info/en/travel-info/arrival-traffic/cable_railway), so I bought my ticket and in I went. And then out I went again. Honestly, it was so terrifying whilst it was still on the bottom of the mountain that I just could not bare the thought of going on it all the way up there.
So because I’m stupid and stubborn (bloody deadly combination), I decided to walk…all the way up there. My friends…let me tell you, half way through that climb all I could think was “This is it. This is how I die.” I actually went on my hands and knees at a certain point….(what a sight, not).
However…..those views!
Guess who then had to walk all the way back down? Yep. Correct. The thought at that point was “If I slip, this should be fun for anyone watching me tumbling down to the bottom. Oh and yeah. This is how I die.”
So, apparently I didn’t die and at 2pm I got on a train to Zurich, for my last stop! I quickly stopped at the Mozart Cafe for lunch and off I went. In Zurich I was going to meet up with one of my best friends so I just couldn’t wait to get there!
